Physician’s Gifts
Physician’s gifts are the perfect gift for doctors, medical school graduates or other members of the medical profession. As one of the most honored and respected vocations, the profession of medicine dates back to antiquity.
Having reached a certain level of self-realization, ancient humans were curious about how the body worked. The story of ancient medicine is replete with much myth and lore.
Science has given us more insight into our existence. Common medical symbols include the classic Caduceus of Mercury and the Staff of Asclepius. Both of these ancient symbols can be found adorning many styles of decorative physician’s gifts.
These symbols have much different origins but are nonetheless significant. Asclepius was a Greek god of medicine. Early printers used the symbol of the snake and staff to denote a medical entry or theme. The origin of the symbol is thought by some to represent the capture and removal of parasitic worms from the body of the patient.
The Caduceus of Mercury is said to represent the magical power of Mercury, the great messenger of the gods. Ancient forms of medicinal healing were closely associated with magic and the occult or favorable wish of the gods that the patient survive or that the healer held great powers.
